I witnessed an incident in the morning of Nov. 27, 2015 at Uluwatu surf break that left me and others shocked and speechless and involved the owner of Padang Padang surf camp "Andrew" and a foreign girl. I write this to raise awareness as I find it unacceptable that a Western man whose entire existence depends on foreign tourists and who runs a surf camp would --unprovoked-- abuse and threaten a female surfer.
She was on her own and paddled out to the lineup when he started yelling and screaming at her from far away to "fuck off, fuck off...troublemaker, leave my wife alone, etc." he paddled up to her and we all gasped, thinking he would hit her. She stood her ground and took the tirade of abuse without responding. She stayed in the water her whole session and wishing I had intervened I later asked her what this was all about. She told me that a local woman had dropped in on her a few days before the incident and that she had asked her why she dropped in on her, after having observed that the woman would herself yell at anyone who dropped in on her. Instead of a normal exchange, verbal abuse and aggressive insults were handed out right away.Turns out the woman is "Ina", the wife of the Surf camp owner. This continued the next day in the presence of a witness, with more insults dished out and a threat to get the girl deported. The day after that, the incident with Andrew occurred, witnessed by dozens of people, including the employees of a well-known local surf shop. This behaviour is despicable and extremely worrying, so word about the harassment spread quickly. Regarding threats of deportation, tourists need to be aware that there is a possibility drugs could be planted in bags to get them deported or locals could be paid to harm them, as has been reported in the media in the past. As for the surf camp owners, their motives for the abuse and humiliation are inexcusable and make one wonder if they even care about their image and how it makes everyone in the water feel. This post should not be deleted as awareness should be raised and there are dozens of witnesses to back this up.
